Heres the thing about smoking any meat you actually dont need hardly any ingredients! Some folks even say just meat, salt & black pepper! For these beef ribs, I used:

Tricks To Using A Gas Grill

While you can turn out beef ribs from a gas grill that are just as delicious as the next persons, you will have to make a few adjustments. However, you cannot beat the convenience of a gas grill.

If you are new to the art of barbecuing, gas grills are more forgiving as they do not get as hot as charcoal grills. They also do not require the setup and the intense babysitting of their charcoal cousins. Finally, gas grills are much easier to clean.

The challenges you will face with a gas grill are flavor and smoke. Smokers and charcoal grills run circles around the gas grill on smoke production. You can somewhat get around this by using a smoker box or a smoke bomb.

While you can easily create juicy and tasty beef ribs with a gas grill, you may often struggle to obtain that signature barbecue flavor. Here is where the strategic use of sauce and wood comes into play.

You cannot exactly replicate the subtle blend of wood and charcoal flavors you get from a charcoal grill or the bold smoky accents from a smoker. Your ribs, however, will have a signature flavor of their own.

*Pro-tip A gas grill will not produce a large amount of smoke. Nevertheless, this is a good thing because excess smoke in a gas grill will ensure your food has a bitter flavor.

What kind of wood should you use on a gas grill? Use a dry hardwood. For beef ribs, you will do very well with mesquite, oak, or hickory. You can also try cherry.

How To Tell Your Beef Ribs Are Done

In this low and slow method, your beef ribs will take six to eight hours to cook. You may see the fleshy part start to loosen from the bone as they reach the end. Use your tongs to see how tender they are. You can also cut into the meat to make sure there is no pink remaining.

If your ribs are in a rack, you can twist the center rib. If it comes away from the meat easily, your ribs are ready.

What about a meat thermometer? Ribs are not the most practical cuts into which to try to insert a probe. Some areas are pretty thin. Temperature measurements near the bone do not tell you about meat in the center of the rib.

However, where meat thermometer placement may be tricky, toothpicks work like a charm. When ribs are ready, a toothpick should slide easily in and out of the flesh between the bones.

Grilling Beef Ribs Recipe On A Gas Grill

No talk of Americas love affair with barbecue would be complete without mentioning ribs. Economical, flavorful, and tender when cooked properly, this finger food is one of the mainstays of casual and steakhouse cuisine. So how do you go about grilling beef ribs on a gas grill? Its not that difficult, as long as you dont make this one mistake that can ruin everything

However, the art of barbecuing ribs to butter-soft perfection eludes many. Personal war stories abound extolling the virtues of pre-cooking ribs before tossing them on the grill. I used to bake mine for an hour, slather them with barbecue sauce, and awkwardly arrange them on my backyard grill in a haphazard fashion. They turned out chewy and flavorless.

What if we told you cooking juicy melt-in-your-mouth ribs is not only easy but fun? Grilling beef ribs on a gas grill is an especially user-friendly way to prepare a succulent and delicious meal.

How Do I Know When The Ribs Are Done

Your ribs will be done when the internal temperature reaches 200 203 degrees F. Insert your instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the meat, making sure you avoid touching any part of the bone. Once they reach this temperature the meat will be tender and will pull away from the bone with very little effort. You dont want your meat to fall off the bone it should come off with a very gentle pull.

Make sure that you allow your ribs to rest for 20 30 minutes before you cut them up and serve them. Some ribs recipes ask you to wrap the ribs in butcher paper for the last hour or so in your smoker, or once they are done when they are resting.

I know this is something that is recommended for beef brisket as it can dry out because it is in the smoker for so long. Im not sure it is necessary for beef ribs, but I will leave it up to you if you would like to do this with your ribs.

I like to serve my ribs with a dish of bbq sauce on the side. Some people like to dip the meat into the sauce. I have also been asked if I had any hot sauce when I served up my ribs, so be prepared to serve yours with a few condiments, it all depends on who you are serving!

    Grill

Prepping any meat before grilling is essential to get the best results. Here is how you can prepare your beef ribs before grilling:

    • Remove the beef ribs from the packaging.
    • Wash and rinse it out well. You can soak it in some vinegar water for a while to clean and tenderize it simultaneously.
    • Drain the water, and if it is a full rack, you can cut it up into pieces if you choose to. .
    • Pat the ribs dry to remove excess water.
    • Rub your marinade well on one side of the ribs, then turn it over and rub the marinade on the other side.

In your marinade, acidic ingredients such as vinegar, lemon juice, coke, etc., will help to tenderize your meat slightly quicker, making it soft and juicy.

That works incredibly well during grilling because the ribs can dry out quickly on an open flame .

How Long To Smoke Beef Ribs

It will take about 8-10 hours to fully smoke beef ribs. This time can vary from rack to rack, so be sure to give yourself plenty of wiggle room if your particular rack of ribs takes less or more time than this guide.

Rather than smoking based off cooking time, go off the internal temperature of the meat. The temperature of the meat will guarantee your food is cooked to the perfect doneness.

    Cook Ribs Low And Slow

When you cook ribs in a smoker, they sit for a long period of time at a low temperature. To mimic this process, you will need to set the grill to a low temperature and cook your ribs for several hours. You want the inside of your grill to hold a temperature around 225 F/110 C for the entire cooking time, which means you need to check on the grill to make sure the temperature is maintained. While youre checking the temp, take a look at the ribs it is important to keep a close eye on your ribs because once the surface of the meat starts to burn theres no going back.

If you are using wood chips, you will probably have to add more wood every hour. This is particularly important for the first 2 hours. Your ribs will be done when they become tender and the meat is loose around the bones, which can be 4 to 5 hours.

To speed up the process or to increase the tenderness of the ribs, you can pre-cook the rack. Ribs cooked on a barbecue smoker at a low temperature for several hours will be very tender. However, ribs cooked on a grill, especially a gas grill, will not be as tender, even when cooked indirectly. You can precook by either boiling the ribs for about 30 minutes or by placing them in a slow cooker. Once you are ready to grill, season the ribs and cook them indirectly until done. The disadvantage of this is that you can literally boil out the flavor of the meat and the ribs will not absorb the flavor of the smoke as well.

How Long Does It Take To Smoke Beef Short Ribs

As a general rule of thumb, you should allow 6-8 hours to smoke a large rack of beef short ribs.

I wish I could give you a more accurate time estimate, but the cooking time will vary based on the thickness of the meat, the number of ribs in the rack, and the temperature you decide to smoke at.

If you are pressed for time feel free to smoke a little hotter, around 275-300°F.

Dont forget to include the time it takes to prep and heat your smoker, and an hour to rest the ribs.

So from start to eating, allow a solid 8-9 hours. This is why I like to always have more time than I think I will need because if the food is finished early I can always leave it in faux cambro for longer.

How To Place Beef Ribs On The Grill

Beef ribs need a long time to get cooked through. If you try to rush it, you can have chewy ribs, which are sometimes not done inside.

You may also burn the outer layer and end up with dry, uncooked ribs.

For the beef ribs to cook over the grill for a long enough time, it needs to be on indirect heat.

That means when you prepare the fire, leave one side with less to no coals so that it can be less hot than the rest of the parts.

Place the ribs on the colder grill section and turn it regularly to cook evenly on both sides.

If you notice it is too cool and not cooking, you can shift it slightly to the warmer part.

If you find your ribs cooking too fast on the outside and possibly drying out, quickly move them to the less heated section or remove them from the grill entirely until the heat reduces enough to avoid the ribs burning.

How Long Should You Cook Beef Ribs On The Grill

As mentioned, beef ribs require a long time on the grill to thoroughly cook through and still be tender, juicy, and flavorful.

The ribs can take up to 1½-2 hours until they are fully tender. It will depend on the heat of your grill. Remember, slow and consistent works best.

With the beef ribs cooking for such a long time, it is necessary to continue basting it through the process.

Beef ribs are most delicious when they have sauce left on them.

As the late food and beverage specialist Tony Roma’s saying goes, “happiness is best served slow-smoked and sauced.”

Making Beef Ribs On A Pellet Grill

Step 1: Start your pellet grill and set temperature for 250 °F. I like to use oak or hickory pellets for beef short ribs but use your favorite.

Step 2: While the grill is preheating, trim off any excess fat on the beef short ribs. There usually isnt much, but if there is, just clean it up with a sharp boning knife so they look like this:

Step 3: Whisk together all ingredients for the rub in a bowl. Generously coat the beef short ribs with the rub, ensuring you coat the sides. Dont worry about getting the bone side of the ribs. Youre not eating that side where the membrane is, so seasoning it is a waste.

TIP: Unlike pork ribs where the membrane should be removed, on beef short ribs leave the membrane in place to hold them together while youre smoking the ribs.

Step 4: Place ribs on a wire cooling rack inside of a cookie sheet. This allows for easy cleanup and prevents your grill from getting filthy with the dripping rendered fat. Place the ribs on the smoker, and close the lid.

Step 5: Mix beef broth, hot sauce, and soy sauce and pour into a spritz bottle. After the ribs have been on the smoker for one hour, give them a light misting of the liquid. This moisture helps the ribs take on some smoke and builds an incredible bark. Repeat every hour for the first four hours.

Step 8: Remove beef short ribs from grill, cover with aluminum foil and wrap in an old towel. Let ribs rest for at least an hour, but preferably 90 minutes, before opening up and slicing.
