Since its 1970s debut, the Big Green Egg has maintained its status as a backyard cultural phenomenon. For the uninitiated, lets just say that this ceramic beast of a charcoal grill and smoker has hatched numerous copycat cookers and die-hard devotees who call themselves Eggheads. Were not judging.
We can, however, evaluate its performance and help you answer the question: Does anyone really need to drop $1,000 or more on the Big Green Egg? Especially when competitive kamado grills can be had for as little as a few hundred dollars, not to mention that some great gas grillsas well as the top-rated charcoal grills from our testsstart just north of $100. But the Big Green Egg was never trying to supplant gas and charcoal grills and, frankly, its design has little in common with traditional grills.
The Big Green Egg was the only widely known kamado grill for years, says Mark Allwood, a market analyst who oversees grills for Consumer Reports. But in the past few years, weve seen lots of kamado models from other brands trying to capitalize on the popularity of the Egg.
Can You Grill On A Kamado
Kamados can get mighty hot. We cranked a Big Green Egg until a column of fire shot out the top, and it was like a blast furnace inside. That’s great for searing the snot out of thin meats, like skirt steak, that you just want to cook hot and fast, but once kamados get hot, they take forever to cool down. Along with the difficulty of creating a two-zone setup, this is why we believe most kamados function better as smokers and ovens than as grills.
If you really want to take your grilling skills to the highest level, then you need to master two-zone cooking and get a charcoal grill in addition to the kamado, or select a kamado that can do two-zone cooking.

What’s The Best Way To Clean A Kamado Smoker Or Grill
Kamados are notoriously tricky to clean because of their unique size and shape. The most important maintenance tip is to make sure to completely empty the smoker of ash after every use. If the interior of your grill has a build-up of food residue, heat the grill to the highest possible temperature to burn it off, then let cool for 30 minutes. Brush the sides with a grill brush and remove any ash or particles that remain. For cleaning the exterior, simply use a mild detergent diluted with water or a glass cleaner and wipe with a clean cloth.
Smaller And Portable Grill
A decent way to start with the smaller grill is using at least 30 briquettes of charcoal. However, you might need more depending on the weather. If its windy or rainy, double the amount.
Also, you dont need to add the whole amount of charcoal at one go. If you want it to burn for a long time you can add a small amount every 30 minutes.

Even to novice barbeque enthusiasts, some grills have the advantage of being universally recognizable. This is particularly true for the kamado or iconic ceramic style grill, popularly referred to as the Big Green Egg. It garnered attention as the first of its kind in the US.
While only a handful of products that first hit the market have the luxury of becoming impressively synonymous with their brands, the Big Green Egg remains known to date.
Its been about 50 years since its penetration into the grilling world, but the BGE remains one of the most durable and easily accessible kamado grills in the market.

Youll learn what vent locations create a given temperature as you gain experience with your kamado. By regularly changing the vents, you can avoid losing the desired temperature. Set it up and see where it takes you.
The lower vent regulates the temperature range for around +/-100 degrees. Whereas the top vent fine-tunes it for around +/-25 degrees). Get a Green Egg thermometer if you wanna be really precise with your heat adjustments.
When you lift the lid, the top outlet no longer restricts air movement. Therefore youll need to regulate the bottom vent.
Because of the thermal mass of the ceramics, it becomes much easier to raise the temperature than it is to lower it.
