What Is An Air Fryer
Our air fryer is one of our favourite kitchen appliances, because it cooks our favourite meals quicker and healthier. They work by cooking food by rapidly circulating hot air around. It gives a crispy texture with much less oil than frying or roasting. By cooking this way, the air circulation cooks food evenly and nothing sticks. See below in the FAQs for our recommendation of which air fryer is the best.
How Long Does It Take To Cook Steak In Airfryer
Airfryers are one of the most popular cooking devices on the market. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and they often feature safety features like programs that monitor the food in the oven and shut off when it reaches a certain temperature. The downside to Airfryers is that they can take some time to cook steak, especially if youre using a large piece of meat.
How Long Does It Take To Cook Steak In An Air Fryer
In our testing, we found that cook times vary dramatically between brands of air fryers. As a result, we have given wider than normal ranges on suggested cook times. It should take anywhere between 7 to 9 minutes for a medium-rare steak, and 10 to 14 minutes for a medium steak. Until you know the cook time on your air fryer, its best to begin checking at the first time listed and adjust as needed.
The best way to know when your steak is finished is to use a meat thermometer. You want to be sure it has reached a food-safe cooking temperature.

Is It Possible To Cook Steak In An Air Fryer
In short, it is possible to cook steak in an air fryer. However, it depends on the type of air fryer that you have if your steak will come out as crispy as one cooked in hot oil.
As I mentioned earlier, an air fryer uses little to no oil and energy as a regular oven and convection oven do. This is why it can sometimes be too dry to cook your steak in.
However, if you can find an air fryer that uses a hot air mechanism, then your steak will become crispy on the outside and juicy inside.

These steaks go straight from the freezer to the air fryer, with just a quick stop for seasoning first.
The best part is that you really can make a perfectly cooked medium-rare steak using this method! Don’t worry that the air fryer will dry out your steaks, because it won’t if you follow these instructions.

Why Use The Air Fryer
I know what youre thinking. Why make steak in the air fryer when you can make it on a grill or follow my reverse sear method for perfectly cooked steaks? I will admit that cooking air frying steak is not my favorite method because its harder to get the perfectly browned crust that you can get from other methods.
There are a few reasons to make steak in your air fryer though. The first is, of course, that it tastes great. The high heat of the air fryer cooks the outside of the steak quickly, locking in the juices. It doesnt brown as much as from other methods, but its still very good. Note that Ive added a little bit of sugar to my recipe to aid in getting the outside a bit caramelized, browned, and crisped.
Another reason is that its so low fuss! Unlike a grill, theres no flame to worry about. That means you dont need to hover over the steak as it cooks. The air fryer even turns itself off when the timer runs out, so you dont need to rush to take it out like you would need to do with steak cooked in the oven.
Its probably the easiest and most foolproof way to cook steak. The result is juicy and tender. For a quick and simple steak dinner, this is definitely a great method to use.

How To Get A Good Sear
Air frying with its fan and high-ish temps can replicate the same kind of sear you get on a grill or cast iron pan. The trick is getting the steak as close to the heating element as possible. For these photos, I used air fryer racks to lift the steaks right up to the heating element, and the resulting crust is pretty darn decent.
Air Fryer Steak With Roasted Potatoes Recipe
I start cooking the roasted potato first. In a medium bowl, add the chopped potatoes, olive oil, cayenne pepper, Italian herbs, and salt. Mix them well and make sure the potatoes are coated evenly.
While preparing the potatoes, pre-heat the air fryer to 360°F for 5 minutes. Once 5 minutes is up, place the potatoes into the air fryer basket. Let them cook for 15 minutes. Give it a quick toss halfway through.
Once 15 minutes is up, the potatoes should be crispy and brown. Take them out from the air fryer and set aside.
Next, it is time to cook the steak. Rub some oil, salt, and pepper on both sides of the steak.
Place the steak into the air fryer basket. Cook at 400°F for 7 to 14 minutes, depending on the preference of steak doneness. I prefer a medium rare steak, which takes around 10 minutes. The cooking time for the steak depends on the thickness of the cut as well. For a more accurate guide, you may use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the steak. You may refer to the information below for the temperature of the different doneness.

Why Do You Let The Steak Rest Before Slicing
Resting is one of the most important parts of cooking a steak. You definitely dont want to skip this step, or youll risk losing all those wonderful juices!
Under heat, the muscle fibers in meat contract and release their juices, so youll lose them if you cut into the steak immediately.
As the meat rests, however, it will begin to reabsorb and redistribute the juices, giving you a much more tender steak. Just ten minutes makes a big difference!
Why Do Chefs Spoon Butter Over Steak
Basting your steak with butter is a pro chef tip that will forever change the way you cook! Using butter adds richness to the steak and is the perfect final touch. It bathes the meat and helps the heat distribute into every nook crevice on the surface.
Wait to bathe the steak with the butter until the end of the cooking process to prevent the butter from burning. It is ok to slightly brown the butter because that will add a rich and nutty sauce to your steak.

Does Steak Have To Be Thawed Before Cooking In Air Fryer
Air fryers are great for cooking a variety of foods, but sometimes things dont go as planned. For example, if you forget to thaw your steak before cooking it in the air fryer, it can get really tough and overcooked. If youre still not sure whether or not your steak needs to be thawed before cooking, there are some general tips that can help:
- Make sure the meat is cooked through The colder the meat is when its cooked, the faster it will become dry and tough. This means that if your steak isnt cooked through enough, itll likely be too tough and red in the end.
- Keep an eye on the pan When cookin, always monitor the pan so that you dont overcook your food.
Air Fryer Frozen Steak Instructions
Youll only need a few items to make your main course in the air fryer:
- Salt and pepper
- Butter, if desired
Once the meat is prepared, and the appliance is ready, place the steaks in the air fryer. Frozen steak does not take long to cook in the air fryer, so youll want to remain close.
After about five or six minutes, turn the steaks using tongs . Then return to cooking for 5 to 7 minutes more, or until the meat has reached the appropriate internal temperature . All told, your steak should be done after about 11-12 minutes.
Its optional, but you can add butter or compound butter to the steaks 2 minutes before you remove it from the air fryer.

Choosing Your Cut Of Steak
Choosing the right cut of steak is the key to a tasty and flavorful steak.
- A) Strip Loin The strip steakalso known as a New York stripis cut from the short loin.
- B) Tenderloin This part is soft and lean, great for those who want a great bite without the fat.
- C) T-Bone The T-bone is a bone-in steak from the short loin. This cut has a T-shaped bone that separates the tenderloin section from the larger portion of the top loin.
- D) Porterhouse The porterhouse steak is the same cut as the T-bone and has the same characteristic T-shaped bone. Its cut from the far back containing a larger portion of filet mignon.
- E) Rib-Eye The rib-eye is the juiciest, most marbled steak, it is tender and fattier than other cuts of steak.
- F) Flank The flank is a rather tough slice of muscle that works really well either by slow braising.
- G) Sirloin The sirloin steak is not particularly tender nor tasteful.
For this recipe, Im using a Strip Loin, which is leaner hence I added some oil to ensure that it stays juicy and tender after cooking.
