How To Cook Strip Steak In The Oven
Cooking your Kansas City Strip Steak in the oven is a method that always provides exceptional flavor to your steak. Choose your favorite Kansas City Strip or New York Strip steak recipe and prepare your meal to desired taste. Just as in the grilling method, be sure your Strip steak is completely thawed before cooking. We recommend thawing in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours. Once thawed, remove your steak from the refrigerator approximately 3040 minutes before cooking to allow the steak to come to room temperature. Lastly, season your steak as desired. We recommend using our Kansas City Steak Original Steak Seasoning.
Set your oven to broil and preheat for 10 minutes.
Here are the directions to follow for cooking Kansas City Strip steaks in the oven:
Is New York Strip Tender
Yes, New York steaks are tender, as the muscle they come from doesnt do a lot of work, but they are less tender than the adjacent filet mignon. Cooking New York strip in the oven for just the right amount of time gives it the perfect balance of tenderness and chew that many people love. The size, thickness, and marbling of NY strip makes it easy to cook a perfect medium rare steak, but I also have a time chart below for other levels of doneness.
Can I Meal Prep Strip Steak
Yes! Strip Steak makes fantastic meal prep or leftovers if not initially overcooked. If you are cooking steak specifically to reheat later then consider cooking it slightly less than your desired doneness because it will cook a little more when reheated. See a couple sections below for all sorts of ways to leftover steak.

How To Cook New York Strip Steak On The Grill
The New York Strip is a well-known tourist attraction in the United States. To make a medium rare steak, grill a 1 inch thick New York Strip steak until it reaches an internal temperature of 140 degrees on both sides, about 7 minutes each side. Cook for a further 3 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 155 degrees, if you want your meat medium-cooked.
What Is The Best Thickness For A Strip Steak

Most New York Strip Steaks will vary between 1/2 inch 1 1/2 inch thickness. Any thickness will work for this recipe, but if you have the option, I would recommend a steak thats at least 1 inch thick. At 1 inch thickness or greater, theres a lot lower chance of overcooking the steak in the middle. The cooking times will vary based on how thick the steak is that youre grilling.
While grilling 5 minutes per side is a good starting point for the New York strip steak, I recommend using a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the steaks before removing them from the grill. Follow the chart below for your desired internal temperature.
- For a rare steak 125°F
- For a medium rare steak 135°F
- For a medium steak 145°F
- For a medium well steak 155°F
- For a well done steak 160°F
Remember that a steak will rise approximately 5 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature, after you remove it from the grill and let it rest.

Sometimes Im in the mood for a really simple steak. Today was a salt and pepper day. I simply sprinkled salt and pepper on both sides of my huge steak.

Once my grill was heated to the appropriate temperature I added my steak over direct heat. Make sure you have a probe thermometer on hand to monitor the temperature of the steaks throughout the grilling process.

New York strip steak is amazing. It’s nice and tender and it has a marvelous fatty edge and a beefy flavor.
So how to cook it? Sear it in a hot cast-iron skillet, then finish it in the oven. You’ll get a deep brown crusty exterior and a juicy interior, just like in a steakhouse.
Every time I order a steak at a good steakhouse, I’m in awe. It always comes out perfect – a thick delicious crust on the outside, super juicy medium-rare meat on the inside.
How do they do it? The secret is to cook the steak in two stages. First, you sear it in a super-hot cast-iron skillet. Then you finish cooking it in the oven. That’s how they do it in restaurants, and that’s how you should do it at home to achieve perfect results.

Cooking Thicker Steaks On The Grill
If you have steaks that are thicker than 1 ½ inches, then you want to be careful not to let the grill heat get too high, or you will risk getting the outside of the meat too charred before the inside is cooked enough. You can also flip these steaks a total of three times as you cook them, turning the steak a quarter turn with every flip. This will result in those tempting cross-hatched grill marks.
New York Strip Vs Other Steak Cuts

- Which is better, New York Strip or Ribeye? New York Strip is one of the tastiest steaks you can find, just not quite as tasty as succulent, smooth Ribeye. New York Steak has less marbled fat than Ribeye, which means its slightly less tender, smooth and rich tasting. New York Strip is still an excellent choice at a lower price point and healthier because it has less fat.
- Which is better, filet mignon or NY strip? This comes down to personal preference. New York Strip Steak has richer marbling which means it is richer and deeper in flavor. If you prefer a thick, softer cut of beef thats not quite as beefy, filet mignon is the answer.
- Which is better, New York Strip or Top Sirloin? Top sirloin steak is often called the weeknight steak because its tender and flavorful, just not as tender and flavorful as NY Strip, but is affordable enough to enjoy any night of the week. Top sirloin is less expensive than NY Strip because it doesnt have as much marbling, but it still has enough to provide big beefy flavor.

Temperatures For The Best New York Steak
The best way to ensure the most succulent, juicy NY Strip Steak every time is to check the temperature with an instant read probe style thermometer so you dont overcook it. I personally like my steak cooked medium-rare to medium. These temperatures create the juiciest steak because the moisture inside the steak cant escape at these low of temperatures. I dont recommend cooking your Strip Steak above 150 degrees, as it will become tough, dry and chewy.
Use the below temperature chart to gauge your steaks doneness. To check the temperature, insert the probe of an instant read meat thermometer into thickest part of the steak. You want the temperature to register 5°F lower than the desired doneness temperature because the steaks will continue to cook and rise in temperature while resting.
Steak Doneness | |
145 to 150°F | 150 to 155°F |
NOTE: The USDA recommends steaks and roasts be cooked to 145°F and then rested for at least 3 minutes for safety.
How Long To Grill Ny Strip Steaks
Place the steaks on the grill and cook for 1.5 minutes then rotate it, keeping it on the same side, 30-45 degrees, and cook it another 1.5 minutes. Flip the steak and repeat the same process. This should take about 6-8 minutes total.
If you aren’t looking for the diamond grill marks, you can simply grill the steak for 3 minutes on each side.

How To Grill The Perfect Ny Strip Steak

Serves: 2 | Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 5 Minutes
Ingredients2 tbsp compound butter
Step 1: Place the steaks and compound butter on the counter and allow them to come up to room temperature for about an hour.
Step 2: Light grill and set up for high direct heat. Youll want to get the coals as hot and as close to the cooking grate as possible. If using a gas grill, allow the grill to preheat with the lid closed for at least 15 minutes.
Step 3: Evenly coat strip steaks with olive oil and season them liberally with coarse sea salt. Put two pats of compound butter on each plate and set aside.
*Tip I dont recommend putting pepper on at this point as the extreme heat will burn it, producing a bitter flavor. I also dont recommend using a premixed rub as many of them contain sugar which will also burn. Trust me on this one, just use the salt and let the meat shine through.
Step 4: Place steaks directly over hot coals and flip every 20 seconds. With each flip, place the steaks in a different spot on the grill grate. This allows the best searing to take place through conductive heat. The steaks below have been on the grill for about 2.5 minutes total, and you can already see that nice crust forming.
Step 5: After about five minutes of total cook time, use a reliable quick read meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the steak. Remove steaks from the grill when the internal temperature reaches 115° F for a medium rare steak.

How To Season Grilled Steak
Some of the biggest reasons a steak might not be flavorful is the cut or quality of steak itself or the steak might not be seasoned well enough. For this recipe I grilled up a Private Reserve 14oz beef strip loin steak from Omaha Steaks. These are thick, beefy, robust steaks of extraordinary quality.
Once you have a great cut of beef, you just have to know how to season grilled steak appropriately. More often than not, people tend to under season their beef. If you are just salting a steak, I prefer to use kosher salt. You can see and thus control how much salt lands on your steak prior to or after cooking.
If you are using a seasoning blend, be quite liberal with how much you put on the steak. Remember, some seasoning will stick to your plate as your carry it to the grill or your stove. Some seasoning will also stick to the grill itself or possibly the pan you cook it in.

What Is A New York Strip Steak
Youll find New York Strip Steaks at major grocery stores and butcher counters, but it may be called a strip steak, strip loin steak or New York Steak. Dont worry, theyre all the same thing! The New York Strip is cut from the short loin of the cow. While its not quite as tender as the nearby filet mignon, its a great alternative and more affordable cut of beef.
A top sirloin is leaner than a New York strip, but because the New York strip has more fat and marbling throughout, it has more flavor than a sirloin. On the other hand, a ribeye has even more marbling than a New York Strip and is therefore considered to be more tender than the strip steak.
The New York Strip steak is sold both bone-in and boneless. You might also hear a bone-in strip steak referred to as an ambassador steak or club steak. This cut of steak received the name because they were sold in higher end places, like country clubs.
When purchasing a strip steak, you want to look for a steak with a bright red color and lots of marbling. The marbling is the white lines of fat running through the steak that gives it so much flavor and makes it tender.
