How To Make It From Scratch
This easy Salisbury steak recipe is made with simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.
Blend together the beef, bread crumbs, tomato paste, worcestershire sauce, ground mustard, onion powder, pepper and salt until well combined.
Divide the beef mixture into four equal size portions and form into patties about 1/2 inch thick.
Heat olive oil over medium heat in a large cast iron or heavy bottomed skillet.
Add the patties to the pan and cook until browned. Turn the patties over and cook for 3-4 minutes longer or until browned. Transfer to a platter and keep warm.
Add the onions to the pan and cook until translucent. Add the mushrooms and cook until softened. Stir in the thyme, garlic powder and flour. Add the beef stock scraping the bottom of the pan to loosen the brown bits.
Stir in the worcestershire sauce and bring the mixture to a boil. When the gravy begins to thicken, turn the heat down and stir in the butter. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Return the beef patties to the pan and cook for 5-7 minutes or until they are no longer pink in the middle.
Sprinkle with parsley or chives, if desired. Serve immediately
For The Mushroom Gravy
The gravy is unbelievably delicious and a critical part of this easy Salisbury Steak recipe. Its an onion and mushroom gravy and those two ingredients are sautéed to build flavor. Then we add the butter and flour and add beef stock to create the gravy. Worcestershire sauce, ketchup and salt and pepper finish it off.
What Is Salisbury Steak
Well, its not steak at all. Its basically seasoned hamburger patties formed into the shape of steaks. But then theyre taken up 10 notches by cooking in a luscious gravy and served over mashed potatoes. No bun, unlike a hamburger sandwich. It gets its name from James Henry Salisbury who was a doctor during the Civil War and served the original version to the soldiers.
All you really need to know, though, is that Salisbury steak is a delicious way to use ground beef for a family-friendly, easy 30 minute meal!

Recipe For Salisbury Steaks
For my Salisbury steaks, I always grill the meat first to seal in the juices and achieve those lovely grill marks. Alternatively, you can brown them in a skillet. I dont cook them completely on the grill, just enough to get the marks on both sides, then I cook them one of three ways:
- simmer them covered on the stovetop
- bake them in a foil covered baking pan in the oven
- cook them on low all day in the slow cooker
In all scenarios, I cover the Salisbury Steaks in gravy first then cook. Ill give you instructions below for all three methods, but the Crockpot definitely makes the most tender Salisbury steak.
How Long To Boil Potatoes For Mashed Potatoes
Potatoes should be submerged in cold water thats been salted, and brought to a boil. The length of time you need to boil the potatoes for will depend on how you cut them. If theyre large potatoes and you quarter them, it will typically take about 15 minutes. I cube mine into 1 1/2-inch pieces, which usually takes 10-12 minutes to cook. To check if your potatoes are ready, use a fork or butter knife, and if it can be inserted easily into a potato with little resistance, theyre done!

Why Are They Called Salisbury Steaks
Salisbury steak is a dish that is believed to have been named after an American doctor, James Salisbury. Salisbury was a firm believer in the health benefits of eating meat, and he believed that eating minced meat would be especially beneficial.
He advised his patients to eat three meals a day consisting of minced meat, and he even published a book on the subject entitled The Relation of Food to Health. Salisburys ideas were controversial at the time, but they eventually gained popularity in the United States. And so, Salisbury steak came to be named after the doctor who championed this unusual diet.
Gather The Ingredients For Easy Salisbury Steak
This is a beef-centric recipe, so you’ll need some lean ground beef for starters. Additionally, you’ll need panko breadcrumbs, a beaten egg, minced garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, dried oregano, salt, olive oil, unsalted butter, flour, beef broth, water, and some sliced mushrooms. Phew! That’s quite a list, but keep in mind that you’re making both the steaks and a mushroom gravy, and some of the ingredients in the list overlap.
fAs for what really makes this dish sing, Dalton says that it “is definitely the Worcestershire sauce, which gives a hint of tangy and savoriness to the whole dish.” Worcestershire sauce and beef are an irresistible combo, so it’s easy to see why the savory condiment fits in so well here.

Where Is Salisbury Steak From Why Is It Called Salisbury Steak
Salisbury Steak was invented in America in the late 1800s. It is named after Dr. James Salisbury , an American physician and chemist who promoted a meat-centered diet. He believed eating mostly ground meat was healthy and better for your digestive health than fruits and root vegetables.
Dr. Salisbury tested his theories during the Civil War, treating chronic diarrhea among Union soldiers with a diet primarily consisting of meat. After 30 years of research, he published his findings and recipe: lean beef pressed into cakes about half an inch to an inch thick, broiled slowly then seasoned with Worcestershire sauce, mustard and/or horseradish.
It might be said that Dr. Salisbury was the first to start American fad diets! Of course, we now know that moderation is the key to healthy living. So, round out your Salisbury Steak with a salad or veggies and enjoy this great American classic.

Classical Order Of Service
The stages of the meal underwent several significant changes between the mid-16th and mid-17th century. Notably, the entrée became the second stage of the meal and became the first. At this point, the term “entrée” had lost its literal meaning and had come to refer to a certain type of dish, unrelated to its place in the meal. The cookbooks and dictionaries of the 17th and 18th centuries rarely discuss directly the composition of the dishes for each stage of the meal, but they routinely designate recipes or include lists of dishes appropriate to each stage. Nevertheless, entrées and the dishes of the other stages of the meal can be distinguished from each other by certain characteristics, such as their ingredients, cooking methods, and serving temperatures. The distinct characteristics of the entrée were at first loosely observed, or perhaps more accurately, the “rules” were in a formative stage for several decades. By the early 18th century, though, certain ingredients and cooking methods were increasingly confined to the entrée stage of the meal.
In the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, entrées, on meat days, included most butchers meats , suckling pig, fowl, furred and feathered game, and offal. Eggs, on meat days, were never served as entrées they were served only as . Vegetables often made up part of the sauce or garnish, but entrées were always meat dishes vegetable dishes were served only as entremets.

Finish Making The Gravy And Add Salisbury Steak
All we have left to do is to finish making the mushroom gravy. To do so, add the beef broth, tomato paste, soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet and stir well. Make a cornstarch slurry by whisking the cornstarch with a teaspoon of water then add it to the skillet. Stir the gravy well and cook until thickened, should take about 2 minutes.
Now you can add the meat patties back to the skillet and spoon gravy liberally over them. Keep the heat on for another 2 minutes, just to heat up the patties then garnish everything with some fresh parsley and serve.
