Camp Chef Woodwind Wifi

The overall best pellet grill for searing in our opinion is the Camp Chef Woodwind WiFi pellet grill and by a pretty wide margin. The design of this grill incorporates all of the features we already touched on, plus some more.

For your searing, the Woodwind comes with an option to include a gas powered sidekick burner that can really crank up the heat. The cast aluminum burner is also strong and durable enough to hold large pots, cast iron skillets, and even small outdoor pizza ovens.

On top of that, the Woodwind series from Camp Chef has a built in sliding heat diffusor plate that you can adjust to expose your fire pot if you want to sear. This allows for you to decide if you want to sear your meat over direct heat flames or cook with indirect heat.

This thing also has a great temperature range of 180-500°F, affording you a ton of versatility, and also comes in a larger model the Woodwind WiFi 36, if you want the extra cooking space.

Main Structure An Overview

Moving on, this model has its integrated meat probe located at the upper smoke chamber which does not allow it to get too hot, thereby, making it to last for years.

Although this smoker has numerous components that come with it, the major part is the pellet hopper, main grill, and a searing box which is fueled by propane. Woodwind pellet grill helps you to cook enough meats with traditional infused flavours within a short period.

Likewise, you would have little or no difficulties controlling this unit as it has controls which make it easier to control temperatures of the grill and which gives you time-to-time information on the time of what you are cooking than standard wood smoke grills.

Woodwind pellet grill with a sear box is a perfect match and an ideal one for grillers with BBQ and who love to offer their guests food which has a real smoky taste and flavour.

Maximum Temperature Settings On Pellet Grills

Many of the latest generations of pellet grills have a maximum temperature setting of at least 500 degrees. For instance, as I discuss in my Gen 1 vs Gen Traeger Pro Series article.

The same is true for budget/mid-range pellet grills from the likes of Camp Chef, Pit Boss and Grilla Grills, all offer pellet grills with a 500-degree maximum temperature setting. You then have the Weber SmokeFire which provides a 600-degree maximum temperature setting.

As I discuss in my Weber SmokeFire Gen 1 vs Gen 2 article, while I have issues with it as a pellet smoker, as a pellet grill its very capable.

For under a thousand dollars the Weber SmokeFire Gen2 EX4 with its 600-degree maximum temperature setting is an excellent backyard pellet grill for searing: Image

You then have other brands such as Broil King who also offer a maximum temperature setting of 600 degrees and the same is true of RECTEQ pellet grills when their FULL setting is activated.

When you start moving up into the premium/luxury pellet grill brands such a Cookshack, Memphis Grills, Coyote and Twin Eagles these pellet grills have maximum temperature settings between 600 725 degrees.

While a higher temperature setting on a pellet grill is going to provide better searing capabilities, what the cooking grate is made of is also important.

Plan How Much Cooking Real Estate You Need

Before deciding how big your cooker needs to be, you need to ask yourself a couple of questions. How many people will I be cooking for? Do I plan on cooking large cuts or even a whole pig?

Remember that bigger doesnt always mean better. Purchasing a huge pellet cooker can really just mean wasted pellets as they burn more pellets per hour than a smaller model.

A standout feature of pellet smokers is that the temperature is relatively even across the cooking area. As a result, there should be no temperature difference between the top rack and the bottom rack while cooking.

Keeping this in mind, lets discuss the difference between the primary cooking area and the total cooking area.

The primary cooking area refers to the area on the main cooking plate. The total cooking area takes into consideration secondary racks.

Therefore, a large pellet grill with a primary cooking area of 500 square inches, might actually be of less use to you than a smaller cooker with a total cooking area that includes a 450 square inch primary rack and a 125 square inch secondary rack.

If you couldnt be bothered doing the math, thats 575 square inches of total cooking space.

The bottom line is this take stock of what you need, and dont be fooled into thinking that bigger is better.

Smokepro Bbq Sear Box

Most pellet smokers arent so good at searing. Once again the clever folks at Camp Chef address this pellet predicament with an optional LP gas sear burner that can be added onto current Camp Chef SmokePro pellet grills by removing the right side shelf and using the existing hardware to mount the burner. This baby gets HOT! The 16,000 BTU burner range is 480° F Low to 900° F High fantastic for reverse seared steaks. Cook the steaks low and slow in the smoker at 225° F until the meat probe signals the internal temp is about 110° F, then slap them onto the sear box to finish. Flip like youve never flipped before and dont walk away because it wont be there long before a beautiful brown crust forms and the interior meat climbs to the delicious Chefs Temp range of 130° to 135° F. If you have a grill that hits high searing temps, this option that runs a couple hundred bucks is unnecessary, but if you dont

What You Can Cook In The Pellet Grills

Baking – pellet grills are more like your indoor kitchen oven. Both of these machines use indirect, dry heat, which is circulated by a fan and holds a consistent temperature. This is the reason you can bake in the pellet grills and make loaves of bread, biscuit, pastries, and other desserts. Also, there is no need to worry about highly smoked flavor in your baked food, as wooden pellets are combusted, and only a small amount of smoke contributes to flavors.

Grilling – pellet grills are best known because of their low as well as slow nature. Today, there are different pellet grill brands that can reach very high temperatures and allow you to sear the food. You can grill steak and veggies with a clean smoky flavor. The pellet grills with sear box mounted on its side are most versatile and gives an intense searing experience.

Searing – one can do reverse searing in the pellet grill and get beautiful and perfect sear on their burger. You can keep the burger on the medium heart in a pellet grill and add woody smoky flavor to it. Switch to the sear box and preheat it for 5 mins. When the burger starts sweating, take it to the sear box. Let it stay for 1 min in the sear box, turn it 90° and again keep it for one minute and do the same thing on another side of the burger.

Apart from that, a pellet grill will let you roast, braise and griddle the food as per your needs.

How Pellet Smokers Work

Camp Chef Woodwind WiFi 36

While sharing the set it and forget it style of its gas and electric cousins, pellet smokers use a very different system to generate heat.

As the name implies, these pellet grills work by burning cylindrical wooden pellets. A typical set up will include a hopper on the side where you add the pellets.

Dont be confused if you see the pellet grill and pellet smoker used interchangeably. They refer to the same thing.

When you plug in grill in and set the heat on a digital controller, the pellets start getting pushed through and turned into heat and smoke.

Meathead Goldwyn, Pellet Smokers Buying Guide

Central to all pellet cookers is a digital controller similar to the controllers on modern indoor ovens. You select a temp you want, and there is an LED display that tells you the actual temp.

Pellet cookers usually have an auger or another feed mechanism that pushes the pellets into a burn pot typically about the size of a beer can ripped in half. An igniter rod sits in the bottom of the pot and when you turn on the grill it glows like the element on an electric stove.

As the pellets ignite, a fan blows to feed them oxygen, and the igniter shuts off.

The controller is one of the most important parts of a pellet smoker. Its the computer that regulates the temperature in your pellet cooker throughout the cook.

There are a few different types of grill controllers out there:
