Hamburger Steak With Mushroom Gravy

This hamburger steak recipe is seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a savory mushroom sauce. A comfort food classic that makes for the perfect easy dinner option!

If theres hamburger on the menu, I know my family will come running to the table. My kids especially enjoy hamburger soup, beef noodle casserole and these simple yet satisfying hamburger steaks.

Whenever I find myself with a package of ground beef in the fridge and no plans on what to make for dinner, I turn to hamburger steak. This hearty meal can be whipped up in no time at all, and its always a hit with both adults and kids alike.

Salisbury Steak With Mushroom Gravy

This is such a great dinner recipe because it is quick, easy, satisfying and the entire family will love it! Seasoned hamburger patties with a perfectly seared crust swimming in a rich brown gravy loaded with mushrooms and onion. What is not to love?

This Salisbury Steak dish comes together in about 30 minutes and tastes great over potatoes, rice or pasta. My favorite way to serve is over creamy mashed potatoes.

INGREDIENT OPTIONS:

  • Im use 80/20 gound beef for this recipe. You can use any ground meat that you like .
  • I use cremini mushrooms in this recipe but feel free to use another type of mushroom.
  • Be sure to salt and pepper the sauce to your preference. Because there is onion soup mix and Worcestershire sauce there is no need to add extra salt.
  • You could substitute chicken broth in place of beef broth.

    How To Make The Hamburger Steaks:

    First heat olive oil in a large cast-iron skillet. Then combine the ground beef and all of your seasonings in a large bowl. Next, add diced peppers, onions, bread crumbs, and eggs.

    Mix everything with either your hands or a spoon. Do not over mix the meat. Take my word for it, you don’t want tough hamburger steaks!

    After that, form the mixture into patties with your hands. For reference, the patties should be about the size of a donut.

    To prevent shrinkage, poke a tiny hole in the middle of each patty. After all, we want patties, not meatballs. Set them aside on a plate or piece of parchment paper.

    When your patties are formed and the oil in the skillet is hot, add the steaks. You want the skillet hot before you add your meat so you get a nice sear.

    Fry on each side for about 5 minutes. The trick is to not fully cook them. They’ll finish cooking when you add them to the gravy later.

    Ensure you fry the patties in batches. Avoid overcrowding the pan so you don’t lose flavor or that caramelized crust.

    As your patties are done cooking, remove them from the skillet and set them aside on a clean plate, parchment paper, or a cooling rack.

    To Cook Hamburger Steak From Frozen:

    Hamburger Steaks Smothered in Gravy

    Cooking food from frozen can be done 2 ways:

  • Thaw it out fully first. If you think about this method in time, its great! Just remove the hamburger steaks from the freezer and place in the fridge until thawed. Then bake as if they were freshly made.
  • Bake from frozen . Place the frozen hamburger steaks on baking dish and add ketchup and bbq sauce. Cover with foil and place in oven as it is heating to 350 degrees. Bake 30 minutes with foil on. Remove foil and bake 30 minutes more. Watch them as they are baking, as baking times may differ based on the size of the hamburger steak patties.

    We love our skillet meals in the South, and often this sort of protein based entrée comes with gravy. We also tend to find ways of turning less expensive ingredients into a meal time feast. Hamburger steak is one such example, and this recipe is smothered with a simple and rich, homemade onion gravy. Its a skillet meal that is guaranteed to hit the spot.

    How Do You Clean Mushrooms

    The best way to clean cremini mushrooms is to use a damp paper towel to gently rub any dirt off of each mushroom. Make sure not to rub off the skin of the mushrooms. You can also rinse your mushrooms in a colander, but only give them a quick rinse do not soak them in water.

    Some folks prefer hamburger steaks without gravy so that is what this hamburger steak recipe is all about.

    If mama didnt make gravy we would drown the hamburger steak in Worcestershire Sauce, A1 steak sauce, or ketchup.

    Country Fried Hamburger Steaks With Gravy

    Total time:

    • 3/4 cup self-rising flour, use leftover seasoned flour for the gravy
    • 1 teaspoon seasoning salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 lb lean ground beef
    • Protein: 40.4 grams

    How to cook:

  • Blend the egg and the half a cup of milk in a shallow bowl and leave aside.
  • 3/4 cup of flour, seasoned salt, pepper, and garlic powder should be combined in a separate shallow dish or on a plate.
  • Form ground beef into three even-sized oval “steaks,” and then flatten each to a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
  • Coat both sides of each “steak” with the egg mixture and add them one at a time to the pan.
  • Afterward, place each “steak” in the seasoned flour, turning to coat both sides.
  • A large enough skillet to accommodate all the “steaks” should be heated with oil over medium heat.
  • Steaks should be added to oil that is heated but not smoking and cooked until they are golden brown on all sides.
  • Take out the “steaks,” but keep them warm in the oven.
  • To make gravy, discard all except 3 tablespoons of oil and whisk flour into what’s left until a paste-like consistency forms.
  • To remove the raw floral flavor, cook this mixture for about 5 minutes over medium heat. Then, reheat the milk before adding to the roux.
  • Slowly add milk, stirring constantly, until desired consistency is obtained if too thick, thin with water.
  • Now is the time to give it a taste and season it further if necessary.
  • Combine the “steaks” with mashed potatoes, then top with gravy.

    The Secret To Good Hamburger Steaks

    To make the best hamburger steaks, you must season the meat well. See how Ive seasoned those patties?

    Theres no need to go mixing seasonings into the meat then forming the patties either. Seasoning the outside of both sides gets the job done and puts the flavor where you want it.

    Thats a tip that I picked up years ago from none other than Martha Stewart. She was right too! The only time to go mixing stuff up is if youre making meatloaf or Salisbury steak.

    A lot of folks swear that a hamburger steak, or chopped steak, is nothing more than the meat and seasonings. If you go adding stuff like bread crumbs, eggs and other stuff that youre making something else.

    How To Make Hamburger Steak

    Hamburger Steak with Mushroom Gravy

    After you flip the beef patties, finish cooking until they are cooked through. I cook ground beef well. If you prefer yours another way then you can adjust your cooking times as needed.

    Transfer the juicy hamburger steaks to a plate and set aside. Remove most of the fat released from the meat during cooking leaving a couple of tablespoons.

    How To Make Salisbury Steak

    Salisbury steak involves making seasoned beef patties using mince / ground beef, then making a mushroom gravy. In my recipe, theres just two little things I do differently to the usual Salisbury Steak recipe that takes these up a notch:

  • Grate onion and soak the breadcrumbs in the juices guaranteed to make the steaks softer and tastier, a tried, proven and much loved method that I use for my classic Italian Meatballs . Plus its much more efficient than cooking chopped onions , and you avoid the risk of the steaks falling apart if the onions arent chopped finely enough and

  • Sear beef patties briefly then finishing cooking IN the gravy: I like to sear them in a stinking hot skillet to brown the steaks so they are still raw on the inside, then finish cooking them in the gravy so the juices that seep while they are cooking flavours the gravy. Never waste free flavour! Thats my motto! Plus, the gravy infuses moisture in to the steaks. Double bonus!

  • What is the difference between a Salisbury Steak and Hamburger patties?

    Great Hamburger patties are made with nothing more than good quality ground beef, salt and pepper. Whereas the ingredients in Salisbury Steak patties are more like meatballs including breadcrumbs, onion and flavourings such as Worcestershire sauce.

    Salisbury Steak is pretty much me on a plate. Wholesome, homely, down to earth good food thats economical, packs a flavour punch but is not fiddly or time consuming to make.

    Easy Crockpot Cube Steak And Gravy

    This Crockpot Cube Steak And Gravy Recipe is such an easy dinner! Now I will admit I had never made a cube steak before or had boughten one. We got a big beef package from our local butcher and there were quite a few cube steaks in it. Nothing like having it on hand to figure out some recipes.

    Now I did jump on and some of the recipes using cubed steak. looked way too complicated! I know my family loves gravy and rice so I opted to start with this recipe as our first go. Thankfully it turned out fabulous and will be made again next month, I am adding some onions to it.

    How To Make Hamburger Steaks And Gravy:

    Baked Hamburger Steak And Gravy

    In a bowl, combine ingredients for patties. Its best to just get in there with your hands to make sure it is combined together well.

    Heat sauté pan on medium-high heat. Begin forming hamburger steaks into an oval shape If you arent using a nonstick skillet, you may want to spray pan with nonstick spray.

    Place patties onto preheated pan. Brown both sides. You arent going to cook them all the way through. Cook about 3-4 minutes on each side.

    Take browned patties out of pan and set aside. Add all the gravy ingredients to the pan and whisk together well to remove most of the lumps.

    It will take a minute or two of whisking to get most of the lumps out.

    Add patties back to pan.

    Spoon a bit of the gravy over the tops of the patties. Cover and turn heat down to a lower setting.

    Let cook for another 10 minutes or so until cooked all the way through.

    Then serve.

    • If you don’t like French Onion Soup you can substitute with beef broth.

    S For How To Make This Hamburger Steak Recipe Without Gravy

    In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, oatmeal, onion soup mix, milk, salt & pepper.

    Use a large spoon to begin with, but to mix well blend together with your clean hands.

    Roll a generous handful of ground beef mixture into your hand and form into a patty shape.

    I learned from watching a Rachel Ray show that it helps to press the center down to form a dip in the middle as the burgers will puff up in the center.

    Squirt ketchup and barbecue sauce onto each patty.

    You can be as liberal as you want with this step! Rather than making homemade gravy as is the traditional hamburger steak recipe this cheater recipe is much quicker!

    Bake at 350 degrees, uncovered for 30-45 minutes, or until the beef is no longer pink in the center.

    Easy Hamburger Steak Recipe

    Heres what youll need to make these hamburger steaks with onions, peppers and mushrooms:

    • Ground Beef Patties I prefer to make my own patties and weigh out the ground beef on my food scale to make 1/3 pound patties then use a plastic burger patty maker to keep them all uniform, so that they cook evenly.
    • Seasonings Kosher Salt, Cracked Black Pepper, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder and a few dashes of McCormick Chili Powder. Ill add the amounts that I use in the recipe card, but of course adjust seasonings to suit your own taste.
    • Sliced Onions I like to use a sweet onion, preferable Vidalia, when they are in season.
    • Sliced Bell Peppers I used a green pepper because that seems to be the classic go to for hamburger steaks, but any color of bell pepper will work just fine.
    • Mushrooms hubs loves mushrooms so I use a lot of them. Baby Bella or white button mushrooms will work fine. I seem to prefer the Baby Bella, also called cremini, and leave the small ones whole. If you have larger mushrooms then give them a rough chop or slice.

    Depending on whether you are using a lean ground beef or an 80/20 mix, like ground chuck, you may need a little cooking oil.

    As you can see, this is a recipe of simple ingredients to create a cost friendly hearty meal.
