My Igniter Is Not Working How Do I Fix It

Repair Fix for Weber Grill Igniter

If the igniter for your grill stops working it can be helpful to try a few things before replacing the ignition system with a replacement igniter kit.

To help determine the cause of the problem as quickly as possible, please consider the following.

  • WILL THE GRILL LIGHT MANUALLY? Try lighting the grill manually with a lighter or match. If it will light, then you can be certain that the issue is most likely related to the igniter. For instructions on manually lighting your grill, click here.
  • DOES THE GRILL GET HOT? Make sure the grill will reach it’s proper temperature range when lit manually. If it is running colder than normal, it could be a gas flow issue. For gas flow issues relating to propane models, click here. For gas flow issues relating to natural gas models, click here.
  • HAVE YOU TRIED REPLACING THE BATTERY? Many models have a battery in the igniter module. If your model is one of these, you’ll want to try changing the battery. Also, make sure the battery is installed correctly. If you have a brand new grill, make sure that you removed the protective plastic from the battery. Click here for information about battery powered igniters. This doesn’t apply to Summit gas models made from 2007 until present because they have a unique snap-jet igniter system.
  • ARE THE BURNERS CLEAN? Make sure the burner tubes are clean and in good shape near where the electrode sparks. Click here for info on cleaning burner tubes.
  • Grill Wont Maintain Stable Temps In Cold Weather

When the temperature outside dips below 50 degrees, the propane may be taking too long to transform into vapor. This can restrict the gas flow, which means that the grill wont be able to hold its heat long enough to cook your ingredients.

Check the outside of the LP tank. Is it coated in frost or ice? If so, it will need to be disconnected and replaced with a new one.

The Battery Is Dead Or Corroded

Dead batteries are one of the most common causes of igniter issues. If you have a battery-powered spark generator, the first thing to try is replacing the battery. Concerns about battery life are not applicable to piezo igniters.

Replace the battery by turning the igniter button cover counterclockwise to remove it. Take out the old battery, insert a fresh one, and try lighting your grill. If the battery is corroded or the igniter still wont spark after you replace it, the igniter may simply be dirty or need reconnecting.

Gas grill: the burners do not receive gas. First, check tank propane level to make sure tank has gas. Then, reset the pressure regulator to restore gas flow through the regulator if the regulators flow limiting device has tripped. Obstructions in the burner tubes can also prevent gas flow through the tubes.

How Do You Check Pulse Igniter

If the pulse igniter clicks but the flame does not ignite, check the following: Make sure the gas line is connected correctly. Check the pilot light. Is the pilot light lit? If the pilot light is not lit, remove the cap from the top of the stove. Turn the knob to the off position. Remove the burner plate. Using a long match, light the pilot light. Replace the burner plate. Turn the knob to on position. Reattach the burner plate. Light the burner. If the burner still does not light, replace the burner plate.

The Electrodes Are Dirty Or Corroded

Igniters are frequently subjected to dirt and debris from cooking fumes, grease, and food particles. If the electrodes are covered in gunk from months of grilling, your igniter wont be able to spark.

Dirty electrodes are easy to fixall you need to do is clean them using a cotton swab and a bit of rubbing alcohol. Gently rub the swab over the metal tip of the electrode, let it dry, and attempt to start the grill. It may take a few tries to get the electrode totally clean.

Electrodes can also become corroded from exposure to moisture, which can prevent a spark from generating. If your electrodes are corroded, you can lightly sand off the corrosion.

Why Is My Stove Igniter Keeps Clicking

Food debris can accumulate in the igniter, which is the reason for it to keep clicking when it is turned off. The food stuck in the igniter can result in the system to turn off. Dislodging the food debris should stop the stove from clicking when turned off.

    How to Replace Weber Igniter-Sparker

Each time you depress the button, a spark is generated. Since the mid-2000s, Weber has used a combination of mechanical piezo ignition systems and battery-powered electronic ignition systems in gas grills. The mechanical ignition system is known as Snap-Jet and is integrated into each gas burner control knob.

What should I do if my Weber spark plug fails?

We recommend disconnecting and reconnecting all igniter wires to ensure no loose connections. Do you hear any clicking when you press the igniter button? If not and youve replaced the battery, the module may have failed. For help with a replacement module please email us at or give us a call at 800-446-1071.

Breakdown Of The Grill Ignition System

The main parts of a grill ignition will consist of a spark generator , electrodes, collector boxes and wires. The spark generator comes in either a battery form or piezo. The battery spark generator may contain switch or it will have a plug that for a trigger switch. If you hear a constant clicking noise, your spark module is still working. The piezo creates a hard snap. This type of ignition was used on older Weber, DCS and Viking grills.

Unscrew the cap on the battery spark generator and check the battery. The environmental elements can corrode the battery inside and damage the internal working of the spark igniter causing it to stop working. If you do not hear the continual clicking from the spark module be sure to put in a new battery. Many grills today use a battery ignition system like Charbroil, TEC, Delta Heat, Weber, Nexgrill and more. If you hear the continual clicking … it works. If you do not … it’s broken and needs replacing.

The spark generator will have one to eight outlets to plug in the electrode wires. Some grills will use one electrode to spark one burner and have carry over tubes to light the additional burners. While others have an electrode for each individual burner.

Here you can identify the various spark generators that have been used in grills of yesterday and today….

This a rotary piezo igniter that creates a hard snap which the knob is turned.

This is a “AA” Spark Generator that has a push button to ignite the grill.

    Types Of Ignition Systems

Prior to the mid-2000s, Weber used a mechanical piezo ignition system in gas grills. When you depress the ignition button, a spring-loaded hammer hits a crystal, generating a high voltage discharge that travels through wires to a ceramic igniter in the firebox, creating a spark next to the burner tube and lighting the gas. These older systems make a loud metallic bang noise when you depress the rectangular ignition button.

When the knob is turned to the START/HI position, the mechanical igniter generates a spark that lights the gas. The name Snap-Jet is derived from the loud snap noise that occurs when the knob is turned.

Youll find Snap-Jet igniters on Summit gas grills manufactured from 2003 until time of this writing. On these grills, the igniters are integrated into the gas manifold. If you have a bad igniter, you have to replace the entire gas manifold assembly, a part that costs around $100 at the time of this writing. Not such a great design from a maintenance perspective!

The Go-Anywhere gas grill uses a mechanical igniter.

There are a bunch of different versions of these electronic systems, so making sure you buy the right replacement is critical.

A Wire Is Loose In The Grill

Finally, there could also be a problem with one of the wires in the grill. There are a lot of electrical components in your grill even if it uses gas. Therefore, there are a lot of wires that connect these components as well. If there is a wire that is loose, your grill is not going to be able to light properly.

It can be difficult to take a look at the individual wires of your grill. That is why you should reach out to a professional who can do this for you. A professional will be able to let you know if there is something wrong with one of the wires. Then, you can replace them if that is required.

Why Does My Weber Grill Smell Like Gas

Why is My Igniter Not Working?

Sometimes most awkward things happen in grill that there is gas smell on grill. Though it is very rears to the Weber grills, if you found that problem you should find the issue. Probably it happen if there is any leakage on gas, spray soapy water throughout the regulator and search for any bubbles.

Make sure that the igniter is making a clicking noise when you press the igniter button. If it doesnt click, then the wires may not be connected properly, the battery may be dead or installed incorrectly, or the igniter module may have failed.

Cleaning & Aligning Weber Bbq Grill

Debris, burnt grease, or carbon buildup on your burner can block the ports which the flame comes through. This can lead to yellow flame. Follow the instructions in your owner’s manual on how to safely clean your Weber BBQ Grill.

Yellow flames persisting? You could have an alignment problem. Your manifold, control valve, and burners might not be aligned in the best possible way. Your gas needs to flow as straight as possible through all the parts of your Weber BBQ Grill. Inspect the entire flow and be sure all parts are properly aligned and undamaged.

If you find that you still have the yellow flame on all the burners, then you need to replace your regulator. If the problem is with only one burner, then you most likely still have a clog or that part may be faulty.
