What Is A Pit Boss

The pit boss is a heavy-duty charcoal and wood smoker. It can handle large cuts of meat like brisket and ribs, but also has multiple surface temperature settings so that you can grill smaller items as well. This grill is perfect for entertaining large crowds at family gatherings, tailgate parties, or holiday barbeques!

Getting the right temperature and holding it is a piece of cake. Simply turn the dial to smoke with the lid open, give it 5 minutes to ignite, turn the dial to the temperature you want to cook at, and let the grill take it from there. 10 15 minutes of preheating are usually enough.

The grill automatically feeds pellets, but you need to give it a hand the first time you add them. Once you fill the hopper, press the Feed button and hold it until you hear a few pellets drop into the firebox. The computer will take care of the rest. You can also use that button to manually feed some extra pellets if you need to get the temp up faster after having the lid open for saucing or just giving your guests a look at the deliciousness to come.

Whats The Main Difference Between A Z Grill And A Pit Boss Pellet Grill

Price, Price my friends. There will be a lot of hoopla on the Internet, but the main point is that Z Grills is a manufacturer as well as a competitive e-commerce brand. This means they can sell directly to customers, with considerably lower overhead, and offer you great deals on their grills.

Pit Boss is an older company and has been in the market for a while. Quality is about the same, and neither brand is a tech giant.

Do Z Grills Have Pid Controllers

Z Grills do have PID controllers. This is a feature that allows you to more accurately control the temperature of your grill, ensuring that your food is cooked evenly and perfectly every time. PID controllers can be found on many different types of grills, but they are particularly well-suited for use on pellet grills like the Z Grill. If you’re looking for a grill that will give you great results every time you use it, then a model with a PID controller is definitely worth considering.

Pit Boss 1600 vs Z Grills 11002b | Which Is The Better Pellet Grill

We would choose the Pit Boss because it has been tested over 700 times and comes with a 1-year warranty whereas the Z Grills has no reviews and only a 90-day warranty. All in all, both models are great options, but Id go with the Pit Boss because it has been tested over 30 times more than the Z grills and offers very little information on its website or any reviews to show if their product works as expected.

This section is a little more difficult to parse because differences are usually model-dependent within individual brands. For example, the Traeger Ironwood Series differs from the Traeger Pro Series, so its harder to call out overarching discrepancies at the manufacturer level. So instead of getting bogged down in specifics, weve looked at some of the broader aspects and compared them from a thousand-foot view. Build Quality And Reliability

Pit Boss grills are, in my opinion, less reliable than Z Grills and have a lower build quality.

My comment about build quality comes from the tremendous amount of reviews for grills like the Pit Boss Austin XL where there are endless complaints about paint the bubbles, peels and then flakes off so the grill gets rusted.

My comment about reliability comes from the reviews for the Pit Boss Copperhead smokers where the control panels have a high rate of failure.

I believe the reliability issues at Pit Boss are directly related to how aggressively they are introducing new technology into their products. Some of the newer Pit Boss grills like the Pro Series have WiFi connectivity and can be be run through an app on your phone. The reviews for the functionality of the app are not good and, too me, looks like a product that was rushed to market just to have something new.

In contrast, Z Grills is sticking with a very simple, highly reliable design for the majority of their grills. Z Grills are not sexy but they are highly reliable.

Temperature Control And Range

The manufacturers specs from Z Grills give a temperature range of 180 °F to 450 °F. The Pit Boss numbers go slightly higher 180 °F to 500 °F.

You adjust the temperature with a simple dial on the controller in fixed increments for both brands, typically 25 °F.

However, many Pit Boss grills offer direct heat cooking over an open flame for high heat grilling. Temperatures here may exceed 650 °F. At the time of writing, only one Z Grills grill, the Z GRILLS-L6002E offers this.

Additionally, select Pit Boss models are fitted with dual meat probe ports to monitor the internal temperature of your meat. At present, only a few 700 series Z Grills models updated for 2021 offer this feature.

Verdict

This is an easy one. Pit Boss wins thanks to direct flame grilling and meat probes on a higher number of models, though Z Grills is fast catching up.

A Little More About Pit Boss

Pit Boss was formed in the 2000s and the first pellet grill company to enter the market after the Traeger patent expired. Pellet smokers are not all Pit Boss offers . The company also offers a wide range of charcoal or propane barbecue grills.

Grills are not the only thing this company is known for. Their wood pellets are also selling well, and their competition blend is very popular. Z Grills also offers their own wood pellets and even creates sales bundles, including tools, accessories, and, yes, wood pellets.

How Do I Use A Flame Broiler

You can use a flame broiler both as a grease tray and for an open flame cook. During a regular cook, make sure the boiler is closed to ensure grease draining and avoid fires.

To cook with an open flame, open the flame broilers top slider and cook directly above the fire. When the flame broiler is available, make sure you keep the main grill lid open.

Temperature Control & Direct

Now both of these pellet grills are using basic time-based control panels, similar to the previous generation Traeger control panels. However, there is a difference between them in terms of their temperature range.

The Z Grill 6002E has a temperature range of 180 450 degrees, whereas the Pit Boss 440D provides a range of 180 500 degrees. That additional 50 degrees would typically provide the Pit Boss with better grilling/searing performance over the Z Grill.

However, in this instance, thats not the case as the Z Grill 6002E also actually provides direct-flame access which will likely get the cooking grate up to 650 degrees.

The 6002E is currently the only Z Grills model to feature direct-flame access: Image ZGrills.com

Now, most Pit Boss pellet grills also typically have direct-flame access, thats just not the case with the 440D. Oddly on the Z Grills side of things, the 6002E is their only pellet grill currently with direct-flame access.

The larger Z Grills such as the 1000E discussed below dont come with direct flame access. Also, I should note, only a very small area in the centre of the cooking grate on the Z Grill actually benefits from direct-flame access.

Hence, slap in a set of GrillGrates in the Pit Boss 440D and with its higher 500-degree temperature setting the grilling/searing performance between the two pellet grills is likely very comparable.

Z Grills Vs Pit Boss: Additional Features

Z Grills Vs Pit Boss

They are not competing with the top-end players in the market therefore, they concentrate on the basics with limited, costly features and extras.

However, they try adding perks such as side shelves, closed storage cabinets, four wheels, and temperature control features.

It provides, in most models, an eight-way functionality cuisine experience that varies from grilling, smoking, baking, roasting, searing, braising, char-grilling, and BBQ-ing.

Z Grills

Some of the upper-end models have a meat probe to plug into the control panel for accurate temperature readings.

Most newer models have PID digital controllers.

Also, they will include a waterproof grill cover on some models.

Reasons Behind The Fluctuation Of Pit Boss Pellet Grill Temperature

The pan size can also affect the temperature. If the pan size is not right, then the airflow may be hindered thus, make sure that the size is optimum and there is a minimum 1-inch gap between the edge of the pan and the grill.

Weather conditions like humidity, hot weather, wind, rain, cold weather, and sunlight can be one of the reasons why the temperature fluctuates.

Mild temperature fluctuation is normal. When pellets are delivered, the temperature goes up, and when the pallet delivery is stopped, the temperature can fluctuate slightly.

Some more general reasons are – opening the grill door too often, heavy load of food, etc.
